The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro was another novel that I had to read for my English class this semester. I enjoyed this book a lot because it told the story of a professional butler from England with the name of Mr. Stevens. Reading this book you are able to see the working life in England, and the thoughts of it being a career, which is sometimes hard to understand here in America. To Americans being a butler is not a career but something that you do to earn some cash to do something else with it.
Mr. Stevens is an interesting character because he truly believes his job is everything. So much so that he does not notice the advances of a coworker Ms. Kenton and does not grieve at the death of his father. He also believes that what he does has a great impact of the house he works at, Darling Hall.
To truly understand dedication to a job, The Remains of the Day is a great novel to read and to understand what it means to devote yourself to service.
