Larry’s Girls, Thomas Green Jr.

So, Larry’s Girls by Thomas Green Jr. was an interesting book. This was this year’s gag gift from my mother, and what a gag it was. We all know how much I love reading and she said she bought this book to “Help a brotha out”. After reading this book I can see that he is going to need all the help he can get. It was not just the typos, repeated paragraphs and pages, run on sentences, and all around mess of the book that made it bad. It was the “story” line. When the author described it to my mother he said that it was book that would suit a college educated woman due to the fact that it is set in a college scene. Well, I don’t know how many college educated women that he has talked to, but this was not suitable.

It was mainly about sex of college coeds and so called “relationships” that happen in those types of situations. Granted the book took me a day to read in between getting calls at my clinical site, so it was not difficult to read at all. Well, except for getting confused that there were repeated paragraphs and pages, that I think were supposed to be the same…? I’m not sure. If you want to “help a brotha out” then by all means get this book and read it, but if not…. then don’t. Until next time,

School makes me want to read less….

With the large amount of reading that I have had to do for school this year, I’ve actually resorted to thumbing through magazines to do something different. Now, I did not read magazines through out high school, and just started to indulge in them in college. I now am a subscriber to three magazines I believe. The only problem with that is, that I now have all of these magazines around my room, unread, because I don’t even have time for those! No wonder my brain is fried without any type of creative or imaginary things running rampant through it. I mean it’s not crazy to want to lose yourself into a different world right? To just take a break from everything that is around you and escape without the cost of a vacation… that’s okay right?

Well I’m saying that it is okay, and I’m going to find a way to do more of it, but until that time, I guess I’m glad that it’s summer vacation!! Time to read all I want and to do it outside in the sun. Until next time,

Sarah Dessen came to Pittsburgh!!!

As I said in my video blog. Sarah Dessen came to Pittsburgh!! As we all know she is my favorite author of all time and I was so excited to see her! Unfortunately I was not able to stay and get an autograph or a picture with her, but I did muster up the courage to ask her a question.
During her time on stage she dropped hints, or really flat out told us that she is having another book come out in the summer of this year and of course we were all excited to here the news! She told us what inspired her to write another book and that’s where I got the question of asking her what inspired her to write her first novel, That Summer.
Her answer basically was that she liked the idea of a young woman who was different than everyone else, her being very tall, but comfortable with it. Because Sarah Dessen herself wasn’t comfortable in high school like many others, and some of her inspiration came from one of the players on the UNC Women’s Basketball team.
What I also love about her is that she writes what she wants to write. She told us that she doesn’t read other Young Adult authors because she really doesn’t want to know and doesn’t want to start comparing herself to others. She also doesn’t really watch MTV and other things like that, but she honestly writes what she wants and feels, and I really admire that as a reader.
Sarah Dessen continues to be my favorite as I grow up and I can’t wait to read her next book over the summer when I have a lot of time to read it.

In Search of Sisterhood, Paula Giddings

So, first let me proclaim that I am guilty of not actually finishing the whole book… I just didn’t have time to!

I will say that if you are looking to become a member of the illustrious sorority of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, it is a good place to start to learn about some of the women, 22 founders to be exact, and what they did to start this sorority.
I will also say that it is a difficult read, dry, making you not want to read it and just kind of lear what you know from everyone else who is already apart of the sorority.
A little shameless plug for me, I just became a part of this wonderful sorority, Spring ’13 a part of Mu Chapter at the University of Pittsburgh!!

Video Blogging…!…?

So, I’m thinking that I need to start a YouTube channel. Maybe that will help me out. I’m terrible at getting the word out about my blog. So, maybe bringing it to the sort of non reading world will help out my case. It’s kind of awkward because I’ve never shown my face until now, but I’ll try to get over it. Look for it in my tweets @90sbornreader our find my youtube page… also 90sbornreader. It will take some time to really build up my youtube page, but my blog took the same amount of time. Thanks! Check out my first post here!
