Looking for Alaska, John Green

looking for alaska     Looking for Alaska was beautifully written by John Green. It speaks of love and loss, and finding oneself while keeping it lighthearted enough. Looking for Alaska is about a boy, “Purge” Halter, who does not necessarily fit in at his normal school, and does not have any friends. His parents decide it is time for him to transfer to boarding school, Culver Creek, and try his luck out there. Upon arrival he meets his roommate who is soon to become his best friend, The Colonel, and a girl, Alaska, who he will come to love and hate all at the same time, like young love so often makes you feel. Their time spent at Culver Creek is one making lasting impressions on each other, testing boundaries, and trying to figure out “If they will ever get out of the labyrinth”.

I did not like this one as much as I liked The Fault in Our Stars, but I still really enjoyed this one. I loved how it was written as a count down, and with each passing day I was wondering what we were counting down to, and what we got to was shocking. I liked what this novel made you think about, and whether you cherish the people around you, and how you react to the circumstances you are given. If you read The Fault in Our Stars and loved it, continue reading the rest of John Green’s collection and you will enjoy the way you feel while reading, and how much it opens your mind to everything else. Until next time,

The Book Thief, Mark Zusak

the-book-thief

Oh, The Book Thief, played with my emotions. Once again I chose something that made me want to curl up in a ball, and ball. This wonderful novel is about a girl, who was given the nickname of “Book Thief” by the narrator, Lisel, from a very young age has been through a lot. We start with her on a train with her mother and her brother. Her mother is having to go through the decision of having to give her children up for foster care because of the problems in Nazi Germany. On the way there Lisel witnesses her brother die right in front of her with one last cough. During one of the transfers at a train stop, she and her mother are forced to bury her brother, and that is where Lisel steals her first book. The Grave Diggers Handbook. When Lisel and her mom finally get to their destination, Lisel meets her new family. She doesn’t like her mom too much, but she is immediately attracted to her new father, and finds comfort in his presence. Growing up during the world of Nazi Germany, and the world of Hitler, Lisel learns a lot about her character, what it means to be scared, what it means to be brave, and what it means to take risks.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! It was not a quick read, but it was a very, very good one. It made you laugh, cry, think about your own family, and what would you do when your beliefs were tested. It also gave you a different insight to what Nazi Germany was like for the Germans who might not have agreed with what Hitler was doing at the time. I also loved the way it was written, and who the narrator was. It gave the story its own feel, and a more unbiased approach. Once again I will recommend this book to anyone and everyone!! Until next time,

The Fault in Our Stars, John Green

fault in our stars
This story is about a young girl named Hazel who is in the fight of her life. Or, really it is more like a battle because there is no way she can win the fight. Hazel has cancer and she will always have difficulty breathing due to the fluid that has filled her lungs, but that does not stop her from living the life that she wants. In her support group she meets a boy who will forever change her life, Augusts Waters. Augusts also has cancer, but he is one of the “lucky ones” and is now considered cancer free, but in his battle he lost his leg. What the two of them found in each other is something that only a few people can hope to gain in a full lifetime, that these two teenagers found in their battles.

This novel got me. Yes, it got me. This novel touched so many emotions of mine, some of which I didn’t know I had. To me the overall idea of it was uplifting, and made me want to reevaluate my life, and how I see myself and others around me. To me the whole premise of the novel was to live life the way you want to, find true love and go after it no matter what the consequences may be. To truly let your heart be opened even if you think it might be shattered. What I also really enjoyed was that there was a story within a story, with the one that she was reading, and the one that was going on in her life, and the similarities that came about. The amount of tears I had reading this was ridiculous. It has been a long time since a novel effected me as much as this one did. Well that’s kind of true. The Five People You Meet in Heaven also made me think about life to its core. John Green did a fantastic job with this, and I can’t wait to read more of his work. I just recently got Looking for Alaska and I cannot wait to read that either. If you can’t tell, of course I recommend this novel. I would read it again if I felt like I can take the emotional tole of it, but I don’t think that I can. Until next time,

Clockwork Princess (Infernal Devices), Cassandra Clare

-Clockwork-Princess

I still can’t believe this is the last book. I was sad when I started reading it because I knew that this was the end of the series. Well, lets see what happens.

In this one Tessa really comes into her own and finds out what it means to be a Shadowhunter and it seems like she really likes what she’s becoming apart of and loves her new family. There’s also some sounds of wedding bells in the air, but who are the ones getting married?!  Will also has an unexpected guest into the Institute as well, but I don’t want to give that away quite yet. Tessa, Will, and Jem think they have found out exactly where the magister is hiding, and how to get rid of him.
In my opinion Jem is the strongest one of them all and has decided how long he wants to live, and what he wants to live for. What I also loved about this particular book was how much love was in the air even with all of the dark times going on in the Institute. Even the Lightwoods with all of their troubles have managed to find love in unexpected places. I’ve already said multiple times how much I love this series. Trying to summarize it without giving everything is the hardest thing that I’ve ever had to write. I’m sad that this series is over, and I hope that Cassandra Clare has more coming for us. If she doesn’t I hope that more and more people read these miraculous series both The Mortal Instruments, and Infernal Devices. I know that she will with the move coming out soon. Until next time,

City of Bones (Mortal Instruments), Cassandra Clare

I found it! Another book series that makes me just as excited as I was for Twilight, Harry Potter, and The Hunger Games. This series Mortal Instruments, is the best of all of my worlds. It has the fantastical, like werewolves, vampires, demons, and faeries, it has action, and it also a little bit of romance, and its own love triangle. So, let me tell you a little bit about the first one.

It was a normal night for Clary Fray, she was going out on a Sunday night with her best friend Simon during the middle of the summer just like any other 15 year old girl would until everything changed.

She found herself in a completely different world, well she was still in New York, but she was seeing everything a little bit more clearly, things that she had never though existed. Demons, faeries, warlocks, the new word mundane, and everything that you once read in a story book and more just became true to her, along with the other things you read in books, like love, and fate. When Clary met Jace her world turned upside down and backwards, never expecting what could come next on their journey that brings them closer together in more ways than they could imagine. Clary finds out more about her past, and what’s going to happen to her in the future.

I haven’t found a book this interesting in a long time, not one that I literally want to keep reading all day long, well not since Twilight, The Hunger Games, and Harry Potter, so of course I recommend this whole entire series to those who are looking for an addictive read. I’m trying to make my posts shorter, so that I’m not giving away too much, so as always feel free to ask me anything. I cannot wait to read the rest of these books as they became a great cruise ship read to keep me distracted from everything. Until next time,
