Binti, Nnedi Okorafur

– Short Story –

Binti is about a girl, Binti, who is the first of her kind to ever be invited to this grand Oomza University where only the brightest are accepted from around the world and the galaxy. For her family leaving is not an option, it’s not something that they do. The people of the Himba tribe stayed where they were and created amazing things that were used throughout the world.
The majority of people are Khoush, who believe that they are better than the Himba people, but they really just don’t understand them. Binta has certain things that her and her people do including braiding their hair down, and using a mixture of natural ingredients called otjize in their hair on their body. They never washed it off and were called “dirt bathers” because of it.
Binti knew what it meant to leave her village and her home, but she also know what it would feel like to not go to a place where a whole new world awaited her. She knew that she was going to learn amazing things while gone, but she never thought that she was going to learn so much about herself, and invoke so much change in the world.

– What I Thought  –

I really enjoyed this novella and wished that it was longer…of course then it wouldn’t be a novella…. There are more after Binti, but I’ll read those later. It’s a sci-fi- novella and that made it a lot of fun to explore the different worlds, but even through out it there are a lot of places for discussion. The novella brings up what it is like to be different, and looked down upon based on what you look like and what society has deemed you are to be.  Okorafur also brings in the ideas of stereotyping other individuals, and trying to come into your own. There are more books in this novella, which is good because I felt that it ended rather abruptly and did not answer any questions. There are a lot of holes in the story, but overall it is a good story. I can’t wait to read the rest of them. As always there is a more detailed review on my YouTube channel! Until next time,

Kelly Moore Riverdale Unboxing!

I did it again…. I bought another Kelly Moore bag.
Hi my name is India and I have a problem with buying bags, purses, and backpacks.
I decided to buy this bag because it was on sale for their birthday, and it was just about half off, so I had to jump on it.
I will say that after using it the strap is too short. I don’t know how they make it longer in their pictures, but when I even extend the strap to the last hole it was too short for me. I’ve never had that problem. The purse hangs somewhere in my abdomen instead of down to my hip and that’s annoying to me because I kept hitting it with my elbow. I’m going to continue to try it out, but it is definitely for light carry and the minimum. Either a point and shoot or a mirrorless camera with a fixed lens.  Do you own any of their bags? Let me know what you think! Until next time,

Atlanta Kickback Book Convention Wrap Up!

This year I was able to attend the Atlanta Kickback, which is a type of book convention. I’ve titled it the “Atlanta Kickback Book Convention” because it is normally titled the “Atlanta Kickback”, which makes it sound like it is a cookout happening or a family reunion. The title doesn’t tell you what it actually is.

Anyway, enough of the rant of what confused me when I was looking for book conventions in Atlanta. The “Atlanta Kickback” was started by a group of friends who had their own type of book club, and called themselves 556 Book Chicks. They decided to start this book convention, which celebrates black authors and books. There were so many authors there selling their books and promoting themselves. It’s still really new so there are a lot of areas for growth. It was only their second year hosting this event, and they already had a great author turnout.

Here you can see my vlog and thoughts about the Atlanta Kickback while I was there!! Let me know what you think and if you’ll try and attend next year!! Until Next Time,

July Book Wrap-Up

I can’t believe July is gone already!! Summer vacations and traveling are leaving us, well those who don’t work year round. It’s time for back to school sales and for fall to begin. July was a good month for me in regards to reading. I finished a lot of books, mainly because BookTube-A-Thon pushed me to do so, but I also had time on my hands.  I also finally decided to give Audible a try and that was the best decision ever! It allows me to continue “reading” a book when I can’t physically hold the book, iPad, or my kindle. Here’s what I read in July!! Look out for my reviews for these books that I will link here as they are written. Also don’t forget to subscribe to my BookTube channel, which will have even more in depth reviews and opinions and are open for discussions!!
