Saint Anything, Sarah Dessen

saint anythingSarah Dessen’s newest novel Saint Anything is about a high school girl named Sydney who has to be strong in ways a girl her age shouldn’t have to be. Her brother, though not at home, is always the center of attention for her mom almost like he is still at home, and her dad doesn’t stick up for her when it comes to her mom. When Sydney decides to switch schools, she doesn’t know what a good choice that is for her, and that family are not always the people that we are born into.

Saint Anything was a very touching novel, and what I would expect from Sarah Dessen. It doesn’t go at the top of my Dessen list, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. She as always touched on emotions of growing up, family life, school life, and figuring out who you are amongst the whole system. I will always be a Dessen fan and will have to read everything that she writes! This of course was no exception. If you haven’t read on of her novels this is a good a time as any to start! Until next time,

21 Books Every Woman Should Read

I stumble on book lists all the time, but this one I found interesting enough to take the time to share. Often book lists are best sellers, Oprah’s book club, what to read after you finish this book, things like that. This one brought a lot of books together, some that I’ve heard of and some that I haven’t, from all points of view and ways to look at life.

I’ve been needing a new list to get started on. Here is a good place to start! Until next time,

Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles), Marissa Meyer

ScarletIn the “The Lunar Chronicles”, we meet Little Red Riding Hood and the big bad Wolf, or Scarlet and… Wolf. Here, in a small town in France, we meet two people who Cinder does not even know she needs yet.
Scarlet has been living with her grandmother for most of her life, and recently her grandmother has been taken and no one believes her because everyone thinks that her grandmother is crazy and left of her own will. Scarlet knows better, she knows that her grandmother would not leave her on her own without telling her why. In town all people can talk about is a crazy cyborg girl who tried to assassinate the Prince…or the Queen… no one is exactly sure. When Scarlet almost starts a fight in a restaurant her family provides vegetables for, Wolf comes to her aid. Wolf is a known street fighter in these parts, and fights with a feral intensity. There’s something about him that Scarlet can’t get out of her head. It is with his help that they go on to try and find her Grandmother, but c’mon can Little Red Riding Hood ever trust the Wolf?
The second installment of “The Lunar Chronicles” was just as good as the first! I had a hard time putting the book down, or really my kindle app wherever I have it, my phone, tablet, computer. They way Marissa Meyer continues to put a twist on these classic fairytales is astounding, and I hope the third one is just as great. Until next time,

The Red Queen, Victoria Aveyard

RedqueenThe Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard starts out in society that is filled with segregation. The Red and the Silvers. The Reds have red blood flowing through them, are said to be inferior, and do most of the labor for the nation. The Silvers are the superior race, and have silver blood running through them. They are also uniquely gifted with their powers making them stronger than the Reds. Mare, is a young girl who is part of a loving home with family who is unfortunate enough to be Reds and have had to deal with the destruction of seeing her family torn apart by the war. When Mare meets a young boy outside of a bar, who she is trying to pick pocket. Apparently she chose the right and wrong person to pick pocket. After getting caught pick pocketing she talks to this stranger about what it is like to live where she does. The day that she is supposed to go off to fight the never ending war, her whole life changes and she is brought to instead work in the palace, where she is a catalyst of something incredibly powerful.
I rather enjoyed this novel. It was different. Though it brings up views of segregation, and social hierarchy, it does it in a way that is easily understandable. There’s thoughts of sacrifice, and believing in something that is more than you, and going after it. I find it interesting that it is in the young adult category because adults can fare to read this as well. There’s so much more to this novel in my opinion, than a girl who falls in love and fights a war at the same time. I highly recommend this one, and I can’t wait for her to make a sequel to it because I need to know what is going to happen to the villains. Until next time,

Fifty Shades Darker, E.L. James

Fifty_Shades_Darker_book_coverThe story of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele is over. Ana has decided that she has had enough Fifty Shades of Grey and has decided to leave him. That should make Ana’s life easier right? Wrong, Ana cannot stop thinking about Christian Grey no matter how hard she tries to move on. She has now graduated from college, moved out of her old apartment and into a new one, and is about to start a new job. Everything should be going great, and she should be doing better, but she cannot get Mr. Fifty Shades out of her head. Meanwhile her best friend is happy and world traveling with Grey’s brother, Ethan, and has left Ana to deal with her thoughts by herself. What is going to happen in the future for Anastasia Steele? Who knew that there was more in store for Grey and Steele with a hidden past that is coming to the present.
I honestly couldn’t stop reading the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. This second installment was no different. I had to know what was going to happen to this relationship, and how Christian was going to react. I continued to love this middle novel, and couldn’t wait to get through all of it. If you read the first one and are not sure. KEEP GOING! It becomes so much more than sex if you let it. Until next time,
